What is an IPC in Yachting.

In yachting, “IPC” typically refers to the International Proficiency Certificate (IPC). This certificate is issued to individuals who wish to demonstrate their competence in operating yachts and pleasure boats in foreign waters, especially in countries where such proof is required to charter a vessel. The IPC certifies that the holder has the basic boating knowledge and skills necessary to safely and competently operate a vessel. It is recognized by many countries as evidence of proficiency, particularly in Europe and the Mediterranean, where charter companies often require it.

The IPC can be obtained through various boating associations, including the International Yacht Training (IYT) and the Royal Yachting Association (RYA), although their equivalents may differ slightly in terms of certification structure.

To receive an IPC for Yachts, the Basic & Inshore Powerboat Cruising classes last a combined 46 hours over the course of a week.  All classes require skills evaluation and knowledge tests.
